Public Transport & Getting Around the Netherlands
Train
Getting from Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam is really easy! The NS train system goes all over the country, and even to Belgium or Germany. There is a train station below the airport that will take you directly to Amsterdam or Utrecht. You will need to buy an airport train ticket at one of the yellow kiosks. If you plan to be out and about in the Netherlands, you can elect to get an “OV Chipkaart” at the airport NS kiosk (they’re a one-time €7 fee). But you can also pay for every ride you take, and simply check-in and check-out from all public transport with your credit/debit card (must have a chip, and cannot be American Express).
We recommend getting the app 9292 to plan your routes as it includes all methods: trains, buses, ferries, and trams.
Car Rental
You CAN rent a car at Schiphol Airport. But we honestly do not recommend this while you are in the Netherlands. Parking is extraordinarily expensive and limited, there’s great public transport, and Dutch city planning specifically limits cars within city limits. Also, Americans please note that European traffic, signage, and driving rules are very very different than those in the US (even if you have an automatic car).
Dress code
Midsummer Cocktail
Think fun and summery colors and bold patterns. Also note that it will be in the garden, so there’s some risk with very long dresses. For my Dutchies: this is not extremely formal, but it is fancy (no jeans, tshirts, or sneakers).
